Edmee Lejeune

In having surmised that the LeJeune line was Native American, I am not sure what the end result will be in keeping with all of the agencies and organizations that have issued Band cards, Métis cards and the like based on the controversy that has been surrounding the LeJeune sisters, Edmée and Catherine, for years.

Having one's DNA tested is the only way to prove and/or disprove this possibility, although there has never been any documented proof as to this allegation. When I first began researching my French Acadian lines 15 years ago, I learned the importance of sourcing as well as validating. Some sources, it was later proven, were more reliable than others. I decided to concentrate solely on what was coming out of the CEA at the Université de Moncton, courtesy of Stephen White.

For those who might be interested in reading a PDF version of my findings, please send me an email.

Matrilineality is a system in which one belongs to one’s mother’s lineage. A matriline is a line of descent from a female ancestor to a descendant in which the individuals in all intervening generations are female. Such can be traced both maternally as well as paternally. However, the uterine ancestry of an individual is a person’s pure female ancestry, meaning a matriline leading from a female ancestor to that individual (from mother to daughter to daughter to daughter to daughter). The fact that mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is maternally inherited enables matrilineal lines of individuals to be traced through genetic analysis.
